Day 19: Stop the Calls

Week 3: Debt

Today's Easy Financial Task: Send Cease & Desist Letters

How to Rock This Task:

Get your list of your debt collectors from your credit report. You can get a free report and score at www.creditkarma.com

Use Google to find the mailing addresses for debt collectors who keep calling, or ask for their address or fax number the next time they call you

Send a Cease & Desist Letter via certified mail or fax

Are you getting harassed by debt collectors? Did you know that if you ask them to stop calling you, they must? It's the law.

The best way to get a debt collector to stop calling you is to send them a Cease and Desist Letter via certified mail or fax. That's what I did when my mortgage company kept calling my parents and my sister's job asking for me.

I was once a classroom teacher and one day I lost my job when my school suddenly closed down. I called my mortgage company right away to work out a solution, because I could no longer afford my mortgage. Although I was in almost-daily contact with them, they still felt the need to try and shame me by calling my family asking for me. Each time they called a family member, I reached out and I told them that they could call me and supplied them with my number. This happened several times. The calls to my family persisted until I sent my mortgage company a Cease and Desist Letter via fax. After that, the calls stopped immediately.

Get the free template for the Cease and Desist Letter that I sent to my mortgage company at www.livericherchallenge.com under Day 19: Stop the Calls.

Tip: Make sure to list the number(s) that you want your creditors to stop calling, and supply them with the way you want to be contacted (email or mailing address).

Have your accountability partners done yesterday's task and requested a Debt Validation Letter? Have they prepared a Cease and Desist Letter? Now is a good time to check in on them.
